What is Teeth on Implants?

The Teeth on Implants (All On 4) dental implant system is a groundbreaking dental technique that offers a permanent solution to missing teeth. The treatment involves supporting all teeth on multiple implants, making them look, feel and function just like natural teeth. The procedure is particularly suitable for patients who may have missing, decayed or broken/chipped teeth. We asked local dentist and Practice Principal of Mingara Dental, Dr David Bassal who is one of the few practitioners on the Central Coast performing this treatment to share more insights into the dental innovation taking the Central Coast by storm.

Teeth on Implants -Frequently Asked Questions with Dr David Bassal

What is the Teeth on Implants Treatment?

Teeth on Implants can support a whole arch of teeth using multiple implants. This can be used on either the upper or lower jaw and immediately replaces missing teeth which not only look and feel similar to your natural teeth, but function normally also.

Who is suitable for Teeth on Implants?

Teeth on Implants are a great solution for individuals missing all or most of their upper/ lower teeth. In order to qualify for these implants adequate bone support must be present in the jaw. Individuals who have used dentures for a large period of time may lack sufficient bone support to successfully support the Teeth on Implants. Furthermore if you have had missing teeth for a large period of time your bone structure may have deteriorated. Consequently, if your bones are weak, additional bone grafting procedures may be required to properly prepare the jaw for dental implant placement. Your dentist can advise you if you are suitable for the treatment.

Do I need strong bones for Teeth on Implants?

Whilst strong and plentiful jaw bone would be desirable for teeth on implants, or any implant retained teeth, it is not an absolute requirement. We are all in fact made up differently as far as bone and jaw structure – but as trained professionals we will identify the kind of bone dentistry and strength and treat each patient with a specific approach to allow for the best outcome and ultimately success!

How long does it take to get my Teeth on Implants?

This is probably the most asked question we get asked clinicians, and it is not a one size fits all by any means. In the majority of cases we are able to give the patient a set of temporary teeth fixated on the implants within 48hrs of surgery – however in some cases we are unable to load the implants with teeth for 4 months. In the case we are unable to load the implants we would cover them under the gums and issue the patient with a denture for 16 weeks until which time the implants integrate and become strong enough to have teeth fixated onto them. The way we make this decision is based on a refined checklist of parameters which will classify the patient as able to have teeth on the implants immediately or not to reduce risk of failure and improve treatment outcome and success.

How painful is the Teeth on Implants surgery?

Whilst this is considered invasive surgery, we have refined the delivery of the Teeth on Implants treatment protocol to reduce the amount of stress on the body to increase success and reduce pain and post- operative discomfort. This comes down to the materials of high grade titanium and use of leading implant components for uneventful healing complimented by the use of cutting edge methods such as bone expansion and densification in implants sites rather than bone removal for implant placement.

Can I still get Teeth on Implants treatment with gum disease?

In short YES. The majority of our Teeth on Implants patients have had gum disease in the past hence the need for having new teeth. We must first carefully treat the cause (even though the teeth will be inevitably extracted) and ensure we future proof our treatment to avoid a recurrence of gum disease and bone loss around our implants by educating our patients on good oral hygiene and implant care.

Do I have to do both top and bottom for Teeth on Implants treatment?

Not at all. Patients will often have one arch treated at a time if they so choose.

How long will it take to recover from treatment?

We advise that patients take a couple of weeks off work to allow the body to rest and to reduce any external stressors for optimal healing and increase success. The surgical treatment phase is completed (in 90%) of cases in one appointment under General Anesthetic however the patient will return 16 weeks after the initial surgery to be fitted for a final finished prosthetic. This time period will allow for the implants to integrate into the bone becoming ready to take on the load of a full arch titanium prosthetic. furthermore, the patient has had an opportunity to trial a new smile and give feedback before the final set is fabricated.

What is the success rate of Teeth on Implants? How long do implants last?

Whilst implants and Teeth on Implants surgery are considered the golden standard of dental treatment for fixed tooth replacement this does not mean they are not subject to failure. Careful consideration is given on patient selection and treatment type to ensure longevity – and this is why implants are so successful. Our patients are furnished with the education of proper oral hygiene and implant care to ensure that this is a treatment that will stand the test of time – continued support by our clinicians and hygiene staff is paramount in all cases.

Is it a better option than dentures?

Functionally, your new Teeth on Implants will work just as well as normal and healthy natural teeth. Since it is a fixed replacement, you don’t have to worry about having your teeth fall out like you would with dentures or having to take them out etc.

How can Teeth on Implants implants improve your smile?

Teeth on Implants is a complete oral rehabilitation that will give you beautiful looking teeth and allow you to speak, smile and laugh with renewed confidence. Your new set of teeth will be perfectly aligned and have just the right shade to match the rest of your remaining natural teeth if you choose to restore only one arch.

How much does it cost on average?

Cost varies depending on the process, but it starts from approximately 12k for removable implants and 23k for fixed implants. The process can be stretched out, and there are payment plans and options available for patients including accessing their super funds.
